Program Success
Maria is an alumna from our HOME program where she received her GED/high
school diploma in 1997.
From the beginning Maria distinguished herself through her
dedication and determination, both here in classes and in her own
personal life. A positive, caring and dedicated individual, Maria
has set high goals for herself and her children. Along with her
supportive husband Carlos, they have raised two wonderful children,
of whom they are understandably proud. Jasmine is now a student at
Capital Community College and Carlos, Jr. will be graduating from
Hartford Public High School in June. Maria worked for many years as
a teacher’s assistant in Hartford and more recently embarked on
college studies in Education.
Along with work, family and study responsibilities, Maria has
become adept at balancing her time and efforts between these
demanding aspects of her life.
We are thrilled to congratulate and celebrate with Maria the joy and
success of her degree completion from Springfield College this
spring 2009

Chloe is a 2001 graduate of the HOME
Program. While here with us, Chloe proved herself to be an excellent
student, critical thinker and true humanitarian. Her interests in
art, children and politics continue in her life today, especially as
a student at CCTC (Capital). Chloe will complete her Associate’s
degree this spring and is already eagerly volunteering with a youth
program here in the city. They are indeed fortunate to have her
caring skills.
Chloe and her husband, John, are the proud parents of George. Along
with work, John is a distinguished student at Trinity College in the
American Studies Program.
With parents who value education as much as Chloe and John, we are
eager to watch their son blossom and grow into a wonderful human
being … just like his parents.

Stories from the House of Bread
Joseph, a client of our early years, the eighties, drops in at The
House of Bread office on Main Street with a monthly donation of
$10.00 in gratitude for all the help and companionship he received
those many years ago. Joe is actually a neighbor of ours here in the
North end.
Then there is Patrick, who during his drinking years in the 80s and
90s came to our Soup Kitchen daily. Now, Patrick is doing very well,
lives out of town but mails in donations now and again in
appreciation for help when he so needed it.
Aleasa, who was a long term resident in our transitional living
facility is now employed by two non profits in part time positions
working with alcohol and drug recovery programs.
