House of Bread receives $75K grant from Walmart Foundation

A grant of $75,000 has been awarded by the Walmart Foundation to House of Bread, Inc. in Hartford to support the agency’s soup kitchen and Kids Café program. These programs serve over 250 homeless and needy adults every day at the soup kitchen, and over 500 school-aged children every weekday September-June at nine partner sites throughout the city.

Says House of Bread’s Co-Director, Sister Maureen Faenza, CSJ, “This grant will enable us to continue to provide nutritious, chef-prepared meals to the neediest and most vulnerable individuals in our community. Hartford leads the State of Connecticut in highest rates of food insecurity, and the demand for hunger relief is growing. Our ministry has been challenged by cutbacks in public funding, and we are so grateful that the Walmart Foundation has chosen to support us at this time.”

Since 1980, House of Bread has been feeding the homeless and poor on a daily basis. The agency operates a soup kitchen at 27 Chestnut Street that serves 91,000 meals every year, and prepares and delivers 58,500 afterschool meals to needy kids during the school year. A team of approximately 100 community volunteers prepares a daily menu that has been reviewed by nutrition experts, and cooks breakfast, lunch, and dinner on weekdays, and brunch and dinner on weekends. During the school year, they prepare, pack, and deliver hot meals to nine Kids Café located at Boys & Girls Clubs and YMCAs around Hartford that enroll more than 500 kids annually.
