Soup Kitchen
The House of Bread Soup Kitchen was established on February 4, 1980. Our mission was to alleviate hunger among indigents, transients and low-income people in the north Hartford area. We continue to serve approximately 300 to 400 meals daily. Volunteers are a very important component of the soup kitchen operation.  To volunteer, contact Sebastian at (860) 278-3561.

Kids Cafe

The House of Bread has expanded feeding services to include 4 Kids Café sites (Asylum Hill Boys and Girls Club, South West-Chandler Street Boys and Girls Club, Parkville Boys and Girls Club and Northwest Boys and Girls Club). We serve approximately 450 kids ranging in age from six to twelve, a nutritious and balanced meal each evening.

Sister Kristen Johnsen, a Sister of St. Joseph and a qualified chef, is the full-time sister who is directly involved with the program. She plans the menu, prepares the meals with volunteer assistance and delivers them to the Boys and Girls Club. Sister Kristen also gives the children instruction on proper nutrition.  In addition to Sister Kristen, the programs growth has enabled us to employ full time staff, a FEAST program graduate, in addition to volunteers.

If you are interested in volunteering or hearing more about this program, please contact Sister Maureen Faenza at The House of Bread (860-549-4188).
