H.O.M.E. - Helping Our Mothers through
Education |
Helping Our Mothers through Education was established in June 1990,
to meet the needs of the growing number of mothers with children who
live below the poverty level in Hartford. Mothers can enroll in
basic skills to help build self-confidence and develop skills in
parenting, health, nutrition, money management, smart shopping and
education. Formal classes are offered in ESL (English as a Second
Language) ABE/GED (Adult Basic Education & General Equivalency
Diploma) and computer/keyboarding. A pre-school program is available
to care for children while mothers are in class. After-school
tutorial classes are held to enhance school programs.

Mentoring Program |
The Mentoring Program
is a partnership between
St Patrick - St Anthony Church and
The
House of Bread. This program brings children together from the North
End of Hartford with members of the Church community. They meet
every other Saturday, September through May.
Mentors take turns planning activities and preparing lunch. Mentors
range in age from 20 to 70 and come from varying backgrounds. The
number of children in the program increases each year. The program
is successful in that it provides children with fun learning
experiences and interaction with adults and other parents.
Respect and courtesy among children and mentors characterizes the
atmosphere and the program encourages the children to share fun and
work together.

PROJECT F.E.A.S.T. - Food, Education, and Service Training |
Project
F.E.A.S.T. (Food, Education, and Service Training) is a job-training
program in the culinary arts obtaining a certificate of food safety.
The F.E.A.S.T. Program provides unemployed men and women with the
training and on-the-job experience necessary to gain employment in
the food service industry.
As part of the day-to-day process of preparing and feeding 10,000
meals in our kitchen each month, trainees have the opportunity to
familiarize themselves with all stations found in any commercial
kitchen. In the kitchen, the Job Training Program focuses on three
areas: practical culinary skills, food sanitation and working as a
team. These skills ensure that graduates can secure employment and
move up the experience ladder in any kitchen environment. Beyond
culinary skills, the kitchen provides Life Skills Training, that
focuses on changing the attitudes and behaviors that have been
barriers to employment and success.
Since October 1999, numerous graduates have participated in F.E.A.S.T. At
present, some are currently employed by the Sheraton, Tuscany Grill, The
Hebrew Home, ADRC, House of Bread, Subway Shops and more. The
average entry salary of a graduate from the Job Training Program is
$8.50-$10.00 per hour.
