2017 ESOL Summer Classes a Great Success

Posted by:

Tuesday and Thursday mornings were lively this summer due to a six week summer ESOL program for adults at the Jubilee House facility. The program centered on a “culture” curriculum during which the enthusiastic group of students discussed both aspects of American culture and the related practices in their native countries. Instruction involved many small group activities. Topics featured included: fashion, food, art, sports, travel, music, careers, hobbies, and politics. The group even crafted a letter to local authorities on recommendations to improve Hartford. HOB’s Education Coordinator, Andy Tyskiewicz, led the group in lively biweekly discussions as well as much practice with language skills. Andy was assisted by Emily Rizza, a summer intern at St. Patrick’s-St. Anthony’s parish and a student at Assumption College. Emily developed a very well received lesson on art history for the group. Based on the very positive results and attendance, plans are already underway for an expanded program next summer.
